This Week in Wrestling (March 24, 2012)

Raw began with CM Punk, in the middle of the ring; he was highly pissed off with Chris Jericho for airing out Punks dirty laundry on live television. Jericho told the WWE Universe that CM Punk’s dad is an alcoholic, and because of this Punk is straight edge, he doesn’t drink, doesn’t do drugs or smoke. Jericho continues his attack on Punk’s family, and brings up his sisters long battle with substance abuse.

WrestleMania 29

WrestleMania 29 is coming back home to the New York/ New Jersey area. The main event has not being announced yet, but I am super hyped. I have never attended a WrestleMania, and 2013 will probably be the year. I can’t wait for the week long activates, the Hall of Fame and all the “meet and greets”. In WrestleMania 28 the Undertaker is will possibly be taking on Triple H, and I am routing for the Taker.  I want to be in attends for this historic moment, the night the “streak” is broken. This sounds selfish, and to that I say hell yeah, you can’t blame me! I would like a chance to meet the Taker for the first time. Undertaker is part of three different eras, the 80’s (which my brother calls the "Monster Gimmick" era), the Attitude era, and the PG era. Whatever item I get autographed by the Undertaker will become one of the biggest cherished memorabilia’s in my collection. I am getting ahead of myself! Let’s focus on this year’s WrestleMania, all of its grandeur.

So Undertaker finally made his return to wrestling, and apparently he wants a rematch of last year’s blundering contest against Triple H. Don’t get me wrong the match was good until the Undertaker made Triple H tap out without applying a submission maneuver. This is one of the main reasons I don’t want to see this match again. I really don’t want the streak to end; I would rather see the Undertaker retire with the “Streak” intact. But the WWE will have a soon to be 47 year old wrestler who is clearly injury prone come out of retirement in order to draw money for the company. For how much longer will they keep bringing the Undertaker back? Until he needs help to get out of a chair, like Superstar Billy Graham currently does or will the WWE allow him to retire in peace. I am clearly going off topic! In my opinion, if Triple H beats the “Streak” it is only to feed his already huge ego. Why does Triple H, need this win, he is practically the owner of the WWE already. The WWE is always refereeing to doing “what is good for the business” and they should do just that and pick an up and coming wrestler to break the “Streak”. Not an ego maniac! Sorry Triple H, I am a huge fan, but seeing you breaking the “streak” is wrong and in my opinion not “good for the business”.

Y2J is Back in the WWE

Chris Jericho made his return to the WWE last Monday night in front of a massive cheering crowd. The crowd went berserk as soon as they saw a figure in the dark with a lighted up jacket in a crucifix position. Jericho and the WWE are brilliant; they made an enormous impact without saying one word. It really wasn’t a huge surprise to anyone, because all of the cryptic videos pointed to his return. It was amazing how a great wrestler or should I say a veteran wrestler can turn a crowd from cheering to booing without talking. I must admit that at first I didn’t have a clue what he was doing, but once he made his way to the top of the entrance ramp very thing became clear, one of the greatest heels of all time has played with the fans emotions. The cocky six time World Champion is back to reclaim what is his, which is his persona and his catch phrase.  According to Chris Jericho, everyone in the WWE is stealing his gimmick, from The Miz to CM Punk.

There are many different angles the WWE can do with Jericho, here some of the ones I would like to see. Chris Jericho can enter the 30 men Royal Rumble match and win his shot at the WWE Heavyweight Championship against “The Best in the World”.  Another angle is for him to attempt to break The Undertaker’s WrestleMania winning streak, but I really can’t see this happening for this upcoming WrestleMania. The Rock is the focal point this year, and adding another huge main event will take away from his spot light. I can see him rekindle his feud with Randy Orton (when Orton is healthy), if you remember Orton hit him with a punt kick, during the last match Jericho had on Raw. I do believe Stephanie McMahon will return to aid him in his quest for the WWE Championship.  There so many angles the WWE can do with Jericho, I just hope they don’t drop the ball, like they have done this past year.

What Does the Future Hold for Brock Lesnar?

Former WWE Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar lost his third Mix Martial Art (MMA) fight, in the UFC against Alistair Overeem. Overeem is one of the biggest men I have ever seen.  Overeem hit Lesnar with a couple of knees to the body and then landed a huge kick to the abdomen, which drop Lesnar and left him unable to continue. Many of his other fights have ended in the same fashion. Frank Mir defeated Lesnar with a Kneebar that forced him to submit. Brock Lesnar suffered his second lost via a TKO, when Cain Velasquez caught him with a straight right that opened a gash on his cheek and again Lesnar could not defend himself. All of Brooke Lesnar losses have come in the first round and in my opinion proves that he has not fully recovered from his battle of mononucleosis. Brock promised his family that he will retire once he captures the UFC Heavyweight Championship, and to do so he needed to defeat Overeem. Lesnar lost this match and has publicly announced his retirement; he has accomplished a lot in such a short MMA career.

Bobby Lashely

This brings up many questions about Lesnar’s career, but there is one that interest me the most, which is why do pro wrestlers believe that they can make that transition from wrestling to MMA. Bobby Lashely and Batista have left the WWE to pursue careers in MMA. Bobby Lashely has an MMA record of seven wins and one loss, and to be honest I have never seen any of his fights, so I can’t really judge him. Batista has not been able get a fight in any promotion. Other wrestler’s that have been heard wanting to enter the octagon are Tara and Kurt Angle. Tara in my opinion is the only one that has actually come to her senesces. She has stated “realistically I’m forty, if I would have started this maybe, when I turned thirty, I think I could be ahead of the game and be in the mix”. These are words of a person that has realized she is a sport entertainer. I do not doubt their athletic ability, because I am a huge wrestling fan, but in wrestling the outcome is predetermine before the match starts. In MMA two men or women enter the cage and they beat them self senesces less until there is a clear cut winner. There is blood and amazing knockouts. In my opinion many of these wrestlers believe the hype that the WWE and/or TNA have built for them. I am not saying that they can’t take out an average guy (that is writing shit on a blog site) on the street, but the MMA competitors have been practicing the arts for years and that is what gives them an edge over pro wrestlers.

The second question that comes to mind is will he return to the WWE? It wouldn’t surprise me if he makes his return in a future WrestleMania to face The Undertaker. I can’t see him making his return on WrestleMania 28, the WWE is smarter than that, and they wouldn’t have two giant main events on one card. Third question is will he wrestle on a full time bases? I truly believe he will not, because Lesnar has made it clear that he never liked the traveling aspect of the business and besides what type of impact will he make in the world of wrestling, today. He is older and obviously has not fully recovered from his illness. In my opinion the WWE should stick to what they are doing right now, which is focusing on the younger talent. All of the Champions right now are younger and the future of business. Don’t get me wrong I am an old school guy. I have seen guys like Booker T, Jerry Lawler and Brock Lesnar himself in their prime; I hate to see them hold on to something that is not really there. I saw Jerry Lawler in a house show in New York City, and he looked slow in the ring, he can still entertain us, but it is because he takes us to our childhood. Brock Lesnar a great sports entertainer and in world of wrestling you never say never, so we may see him back in the ring sooner then we think.

Who Can Be The Next Top Babyface

John Cena

My brother brought up a good point, about Cena becoming a heel on his last blog post, John Cena on Piper's Pit. His character or/and Gimmick needs a huge revamp, who knows maybe he needs to take some time off, like Hogan use too, back in the 80’s. It is a natural evolution, for most babyface gimmicks to turn heel, in order to elevate their character to an Icon status. There are many examples of this, such as Hulk Hogan, The Undertaker, Shawn Michaels, The Rock, and Triple H. They are now the biggest Iconic figures in the wrestling business. I feel that their turn to heel’s elevated them to this status. Let me give you a sort of career time frame break down, on one of these superstars, I am going to pick The Rock. When he first burst on to the scene he was a crowd favorite, that soon changed and he became hated by everyone that used to cheer for him. The WWE realized that they can no longer cover up the fans boo’s so they took the next logical step, which was turning him heel. Then crowd loved him as they shouted with glee, “If you smell what The Rock is cooking”, he won the fans over and now he can leave the business for years, but we still chant his name Rocky, Rocky, Rocky.

CM Punk & Daniel Bryan

I believe one of the main reasons the WWE has not turn Cena heel is because there isn't a babyface character that can take his place, yea we have Randy Orton, Sheamus, and CM Punk. We also have young guys like Zack Ryder and Daniel Bryan, but I don't think they are ready for this spot. Randy Orton's character is not a "White meat baby face" he is more of a wild card that may turn on any given time. CM Punk is also a sort of anti-hero/wild card character. Fans love to cheer him for all the rude comments and his anti-corporate ways. Sheamus is a fairly new wrestler and I don't feel he is ready to take that spot that Cena holds. Daniel Bryan is a huge star in the independent circuit, and is struggling to make an impact on SmackDown. Bryan won the world title on TLC, but I am certain his title reign will be short lived. I believe Bryan is a wrestling star and can out wrestle anyone in that locker room, but a Superstar he is not. Zack Ryder has a “colt following” because of his internet shows, but I was watching last week’s edition of Raw and not many fans chant his name. This proves that he has a long way to go! On the other hand he is the new United States Champion and will get more TV time, so who knows what the future will hold for the WOO WOO WOO Kid!

The Miz

I have come to a theory, which is, all heels make a great babyface. With that being said, I am going out on a limb here to say that many of you fans may protest to this statement, but my money would be on “The most must see WWE Superstar” The Miz. In my opinion, this guy is a combination of “The Hot Rod” Roddy Piper and The Rock. Piper was an average size man that had great mic skills, and always made his opponents look great in & out of the ring. Piper also had the ability to sell ticket, all the fans wanted to pay to his opponents kick his ass. The Miz is the exactly the same as Piper, with the only difference he has capture the WWE title. The Rock is an Iconic wrestling figure that always as the fans in the tip of his fingers, he can make them cheer or boo him. The Rock has captured many titles, but has also captured the respect of “the millions, & millions of The Rock fans”. The Rock made the cross to Movies and has become an accomplish actor. The Miz has made the cross to wrestling and has made it to the highest peak of the mountain. The Miz has the ability to crossover to main stream media and that is a huge advantage he has over many other WWE superstars. The fans love to hate him and in my opinion, if the WWE puts him in the ring with another heel the fans will cheer him on to victory. I truly believe that The Miz will become a huge mega babyface that can eventually take John Cena’s spot.

Mick Foley

Hello again wrestling fans, last week I met one of my favorite wrestler of all time, Mick Foley. In my opinion Foley is one of the creators of the Attitude Era. He had so many wild matches in Japan, WCW and ECW. It’s hard to single out which match was best.

Cactus Jack

Mick Foley was trained in Dominic DeNucci’s wrestling school. He made his wrestling debut in 1983. He had many names throughout his career, such as Jack Foley and Cactus Jack Manson. Foley wrestled in CWA as Cactus Jack. He made his debut in WCW in 1991. During a match with Vader in Germany, Foley lost two-thirds of his ear, while performing the hangman maneuver. In order to perform this maneuver he placed his head between the top and middle rope, then he flipped himself over and mimic a man being hung. The ropes were too tight and as the referee pushed his head down he lost part of his ear. He had an opportunity to get his ear repaired, but he refused to fly back to the States. Instead he stood in Germany and wrestled for the WCW Tag Team titles. Foley proved that he was one of the toughest men in wrestling, and won the titles with Kevin Sullivan as his partner.



Mankind



Mick Foley joined the WWE in 1996 as Mankind, and began a feud with the Undertaker. The Hell in a Cell match between Mick Foley and The Undertaker was remarkable. In this match Foley executed two huge bumps that proved he was a Hardcore Legend.  During the match the Undertaker and Foley were brawling on top of the cell. The Undertaker threw him from a height of 16 feet and sent him crashing down on to the Spanish announcers’ table. Later in the match both men were back on top of the cage. The Undertaker chokeslammed Foley and the section of the cell gave way. He landed in the ring and a chair that was on top of the cell came crashing down on his face. After all this mayhem the Undertaker won the match, but Foley rose from wrestling in the mid-card to the main event.



Mankind



I remember the night Mick Foley won the WWE Heavyweight championship, like it was yesterday. I was watching Monday Nitro, just like every wrestling fan was doing at the time. During the show Tony Schiavone told us that Mankind will win the WWE title on Monday Night Raw, by defeating the Rock. I changed the channel in order to witness a boyhood dream come true. I was so proud of Foley and the WWE, for finally having a Mid-card wrestler become the top wrestler for the company. This changed my attitude towards the WWE and I started to watch the Monday Night Raw more often.
